I am Meriem, from Tunisia, based in Glasgow, Scotland. I wrote this blog to boost my CV to get my first job in tech.
I got my bachelor’s degree in 2014 in Computer Science, and a few months after that I moved to Scotland where it took me a while to settle and restart my life in this beautiful country.
After few years, away from programming and computer sciences, I made a return in 2018. I followed an intensive 8-month coding bootcamp by CodeYourFuture - the coding school for refugees, asylum seekers and people from disadvantaged groups. I learned a lot in these few months. Technology-wise, I learned mainly JavaScript as my primary language, React for front-end development, and Node.js (Express) and Postgres for backend development.
My graduation project was the pinnacle of that learning experience. I - within a team of four other developers - built a web application to showcase the talents of newcomers to Glasgow. The website can be found here: https://newscots-got-talent.herokuapp.com/ and my PRs contributing to it (Frontend and backend) can be found here.
In the graduation project, I learned more than just coding. We were worked in small agile teams, supported by an Agile coach, a Scrum master, Product Owner, and senior developers who guided the architecture and thoroughly reviewed our PRs. I learned about CI/CD, Scrum and Agile, and testing.
I got interested in Test autoamtion, after spending a day shadowing the amazing team at Aggrekko, where I was briefly introduced to their ways of working, and how they do testing and automation. One of my mentors introduced me to Cypress then, and I fell in love with it. I decided to pursue learning about testing in general, and automation testing specifically with one aim in mind: Get my first job in Tech as a Software Tester.
